About the Artwork
This print is Heather Gwen Martin’s first foray into printmaking. We at Haystack were thrilled when she agreed to do her very first print with us. She traveled to Asheville, North Carolina to create these works in the PS Marlowe Studio with Master Printer Phil Sanders.
Curatorial Opinion
In Heather Gwen Martin’s Welcome Stranger, the title bestows a simple narrative on the subtly colored print. Winding from the side of the composition is a spindly form with a fan-like top. The fan’s face opens to the green form as it enters the composition. This print has an airy feel, and with only three three colors, Martin creates an entire abstracted landscape.

About the Artist
Heather Gwen Martin (b.1977, Saskatoon, Canada) is a painter based in Los Angeles who is interested in the human aspect of painting. The colors are hot and bright, nearing hard edge abstraction while maintaining the mark of the hand. Each shape is poetic, with flourishes of elegant movement akin to dancing.
