About the Artwork

Tunnel Vision draws the eye immediately to its center, where a cool blue form offers a moment of stillness against a fiery red ground. As implied by the title Tunnel Vision, there is no visual prompt to look elsewhere. The blue form hovers with an organic quality, neither fully anchored nor fully free, caught in the updraft of the surrounding field of color. The tension between the two hypnotically captures ones eyes almost entirely.

Tunnel Vision is part of Heather Gwen Martin’s first foray into printmaking, created in close collaboration with master printer Phil Sanders at PS Marlowe Studios in Asheville, North Carolina.

Curator's Note

In Tunnel Vision, a blue form floats amid a fiery red ground, creating movement that is at once gentle and intense.

The blue becomes almost organic, as if flying or suspended on the updrafts of the surrounding field. Red commands the eye in any composition, and here it does exactly that, drawing the viewer directly to the center where the cool blue form offers a moment of stillness within the heat.

Heather Gwen Martin (b.1977, Saskatoon, Canada) is a painter based in Los Angeles who is interested in the human aspect of painting. The colors are hot and bright, nearing hard edge abstraction while maintaining the mark of the hand.  Each shape is poetic, with flourishes of elegant movement akin to dancing.
