From the Artist

Weft hits with this frenetic energy and raucous color but there is a sensitivity and a serenity in how the forms fall. It shifts from fast to slow.”

About the Artwork

This print is Heather Gwen Martin’s first foray into printmaking. We at Haystack were thrilled when she agreed to do her very first print with us. She traveled to Asheville, North Carolina to create these works in the PS Marlowe Studio with Master Printer Phil Sanders.

Curatorial Opinion

In Martin’s Weft, we see the layered biomorphic slivers and shapes that are characteristic of her work in painting. The term weft refers to the weaving process, meaning the threads that run across the loom. With this in mind, the edges of each of the five colors in the screenprint show a tension, like fabric being stretched. Each color vibrates against the border of the next, mixing with the rich tones beneath it.

Heather Gwen Martin (b.1977, Saskatoon, Canada) is a painter based in Los Angeles who is interested in the human aspect of painting.
