About the Artwork
Weft is part of a suite of six editions, marking Heather Gwen Martin’s first foray into printmaking, created in close collaboration with master printer Phil Sanders at PS Marlowe Studios in Asheville, North Carolina.
The title refers to the weaving process, specifically the threads that run across the loom. With that in mind, the edges of each of the five colors in the screenprint carry a tension, like fabric being stretched taut. Each color vibrates against the border of the next, mixing with the rich tones beneath it, creating the layered, biomorphic slivers and shapes that are characteristic of Martin’s paintings, translated here into the language of print for the very first time.
Curator's Note
The word weft describes the threads that run across a loom, held under tension by the structure around them. It is a precise and considered title for a work in which tension is everything. The five colors in this screenprint press against each other, mixing with the tones beneath them. The composition retains a certain energy in a strange and careful balance.
Martin’s paintings are built on a similar principle: forces moving in and out of space, energies expanding and contracting, forms that push forward and recede. The weaving metaphor speaks to that same sense of interlocking structure and movement, of something made from many threads that coheres, against the odds, into a whole.
About the Artist
Heather Gwen Martin (b.1977, Saskatoon, Canada) is a painter based in Los Angeles who is interested in the human aspect of painting. The colors are hot and bright, nearing hard edge abstraction while maintaining the mark of the hand. Each shape is poetic, with flourishes of elegant movement akin to dancing.
