Haystack is pleased to present The Lone Survivor, our third limited edition with Jacob Hashimoto—and the artist’s most technically ambitious Haystack edition to date.

Created in close collaboration with master printmaker Phil Sanders, The Lone Survivor brings the layered, immersive quality of Hashimoto’s installations into the language of print. The work combines a 35-color lithograph with screen print and five hand-applied lithographed collage elements, each carefully positioned to build an intricate, labyrinthine composition. Through the accumulation of color, pattern, and individual components, the edition echoes Hashimoto’s longstanding approach to making: constructing expansive, seemingly weightless worlds from countless individual parts.

Hashimoto’s practice moves fluidly between painting, sculpture, installation, and printmaking, drawing inspiration from video games, virtual environments, cosmology, and systems of repetition and accumulation. His dynamic installations are composed from an evolving vocabulary of modular elements, including his signature bamboo-and-paper kites, model boats, and other hand-crafted forms. Together, these components create environments that feel at once meticulously ordered and ephemeral—an interplay that is equally present in The Lone Survivor.

Hashimoto’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Microsoft Art Collection, among numerous other institutions. His landmark installation Giant Arc, comprising nearly 75,000 hand-crafted kites and his largest installation to date, is currently on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where it is suspended floor to ceiling to transform the museum’s galleries into an immersive, shifting environment.
