Jacob Hashimoto
Life's Little Agonies
About the Artwork
Life’s Little Agonies employs multiple, sophisticated printing processes that incorporate several black tones to capture subtle textures and space. Layered shades mimic the effect of various drawing materials, creating a rich, dynamic result that blends traditional print techniques with collaged layers for exceptional depth and character.
Curatorial Opinion
This print features an abstract composition of bold, layered black strokes that form a dense, chaotic mass in the upper half of the image. As the eye moves downward, the thick linework gradually gives way to intricate circular and grid-like patterns rendered in red and gray, creating a textured and rhythmic foundation. Small, colorful collaged icons—a red flower, a yellow polka-dotted circle, and a blue star—gently float on the surface, contrasting against the monochromatic background.
The piece uses layered textures and intricate mark-making to create a dynamic, almost frenetic energy. Hashimoto’s style often blends traditional and modern elements, using motifs that reflect nature, geometry, and abstraction. The choice of colors, particularly the limited but vibrant pops, adds a playful, whimsical, and balanced touch to the otherwise intense composition.
About the Process
Haystack works with both traditional printmakers and digital printers to ensure each artist’s print reflects the most important aspects of their studio practice. This Ordinary Earthbound Mortal was printed in collaboration with the artist and PS Marlowe Studios, Asheville, NC. Master printer Phil Sanders, assisted by Lindsey Sigmon, worked with Jacob to determine and implement the printing processes that would best achieve his vision. Each print was created by a combination of lithography, screenprinting, and collage.
