Tess Davies
I Did Not See That Coming
From the Artist
“I Did Not See That Coming utilizes more literal natural symbolism, taking inspiration from the expression, “when life hands you lemons.” While this piece appears to be brighter and happier [than Hand Me My Griefcase II], it still uses the same patterns and linework inspired by cancer cells and fungi. This piece is hopeful, despite its chaotic and scattered overall theme.”
About the Artwork
This Archival Pigment Print reproduces an original painting by Davies that was executed in acrylic on canvas. Our digitally printed limited edition captures every handmade gesture created by the artist.
Curatorial Opinion
In Tess Davies’ work, I Did Not See That Coming, the artist uses characteristic marks to convey texture and depth of field. Winding white bars juxtapose black jotted bars, perhaps implying a detour, or abrupt change of direction. Davies’ work vibrates with texture and rhythm, showing the painter’s talent for repetitive mark making. The colors are earthen, terracotta and sage, punctuated by a few ripe lemons. The abstraction leaves room for interpretation. In addition to the associated saying [“When life gives you lemons…”], are the lemons unexpected joys? Do the ripe fruits symbolize longevity? Davies sets the composition in motion to let our eyes explore the image, yet creates a balanced inclusion of moments to rest.
