Karen Seapker
As Venus
About the Artwork
This limited edition of Archival Pigment Prints features a reproduction of Seapker’s original oil on canvas, As Venus. The impressive range of highly saturated pools of color to the foggy swathes of neutral tones is printed with a crisp clarity that ensures none of the artist’s complex composition is lost.
Curatorial Opinion
In As Venus, painter Karen Seapker created depth for certain paint strokes by placing dark shadows behind them and utilizing unexpected color combinations. The dark contours toss the composition into controlled chaos, and the strokes and swaths of pink glow confidently in the foreground. Venus is a classical subject in art history. The goddess has been depicted in various poses; emerging from a shell, lying supine on a bed. As the viewer here, we are tempted to find hints of her figure throughout the painting.
About the Process
Haystack collaborates with traditional printmakers and digital printers to ensure each artist’s print reflects the most important aspects of their studio practice. As Venus was printed by G.Moulin Limited Editions. Each Archival Pigment Print was digitally printed with a lab-calibrated inkjet printer using pigment-based inks (this process is also known as Giclée printing). The 100% cotton paper has a smooth texture and the purest natural white tone available, allowing for every visual subtlety and tonal transition in the artwork to be reproduced at the highest quality.
