Chine Collé Etching 1
Paper size: 14 1/2" x 12"
About the Artwork
This one-color copper plate intaglio print uses line etching and aquatint to combine precise linear detail with subtle tonal variation. A six-piece chine collé of Thai mulberry paper is applied during printing, integrating delicate handmade textures into the image. Together, these processes create a layered work that emphasizes materiality, depth, and the tactile nature of printmaking.
Curatorial Opinion
Across these three intaglio processes, Tomory Dodge explores the tension between control and improvisation. Line etching provides a structured foundation, while aquatint, spit-bite, and sugar-lift introduce instability, gesture, and tonal depth. Rather than treating printmaking as a purely reproductive medium, the work positions the copper plate as an active site of resistance and transformation, aligning intaglio with painterly concerns of process, density, and movement.

About the Process
Haystack works with both traditional printmakers and digital printers to ensure each artist’s print reflects the most important aspects of their studio practice. Untitled was printed in collaboration with the artist and PS Marlowe Studios, Asheville, NC. Master printer Phil Sanders, assisted by Lindsey Sigmon, worked with Tomory to determine and implement the printing processes that would best achieve his vision.
