Color is central to Beverly Fishman’s practice, often triggering sensations of taste, smell, mood and emotion. She combines natural and non-natural hues to encourage viewers to consider the ways in which our organic natures have been transformed by medical technologies and the capitalist industries in which they are enmeshed.

About the Artwork
Color is central to Beverly Fishman’s practice, often triggering sensations of taste, smell, mood and emotion. She combines natural and non-natural hues to encourage viewers to consider the ways in which our organic natures have been transformed by medical technologies and the capitalist industries in which they are enmeshed. Fishman suggests our contemporary condition offers both tremendous possibilities and great dangers — and that learning to navigate both is one of the most pressing issues of our time.
Produced in close collaboration with PS Marlowe Studios, Asheville, NC.
Curator's Note
Beverly Fishman has spent decades examining what color does to the body before the mind has time to intervene. In Longevity I, that inquiry takes on a particular resonance.
Longevity — the extension of life, the promise of medicine, the aspiration of an entire industry — is rendered here not as a comfort but as a provocation. The colors do not simply please. They trigger sensations of taste, smell, mood and emotion, arriving in the body before they arrive in thought, which is precisely Fishman’s point.
About the Artist
Beverly Fishman (b.1955, Philadelphia, PA) appropriates the forms of pharmaceuticals, fragmenting and recombining the shapes to create larger assemblages – drug cocktails, if you will – that evoke our complex relationships to ideas of sickness and health.
