Allison Zuckerman
Möbius Rising
From the Artist
“I titled this print Möbius Rising to reference an infinite story. A möbius strip has no boundaries and is a one-sided surface; I aim to invoke this materiality within the artwork. Colliding the digital with painting creates worlds that can be endlessly expanding, looping back onto themselves, evolving, and changing, while never ending.”
About the Artwork
In Möbius Rising, the artist references a mathematical device invented by August Ferdinand Möbius which has no end, and whose surface is curiously continuous. Zuckerman pulls not only from art history but also the pop cultural canon. Cinderella birds flit about the composition that is interwoven with Instagram influencer hair braids. This mashup of cultural capital creates a composition where the eye is never at rest – there is always one more layer to be revealed.
Curatorial Opinion
Using a combination of digital and traditional painting techniques, Allison Zuckerman creates illustrative collages comprised of imagery sourced from pop culture and fundamental art history. By letting the origins of many the collaged elements remain apparent, Zuckerman allows viewers to feel a sense of familiarity while exploring her eccentric and colorful universe. Whether it’s a recognizable Picasso limb, an inflatable Party City-esque prop, a lock of hair from a social media star, or a wide-eyed Disney bluebird, her chosen puzzle pieces all commingle to result in unapologetic, tongue-in-cheek narratives that reflect the absurdity with which female figures have been depicted throughout the history of art.
About the Process
Haystack collaborates with traditional printmakers and digital printers to ensure each artist’s print reflects the most important aspects of their studio practice. Möbius Rising was printed by G.Moulin Limited Editions. Each Archival Pigment Print was digitally printed with a lab-calibrated inkjet printer using pigment-based inks (this process is also known as Giclée printing). The 100% cotton paper has a smooth texture and the purest natural white tone available, allowing for every visual subtlety and tonal transition in the artwork to be reproduced at the highest quality.
