About the Artwork
This one-color copper plate intaglio print is created using line etching, emphasizing precision, clarity, and expressive mark-making. The etched lines are inked and printed to produce a composition that highlights contrast, detail, and the direct, hand-drawn nature of the intaglio process.
Large Line Etching was printed in collaboration with the artist and PS Marlowe Studios, Asheville, NC, working closely with the artist to determine and implement the printing processes that would best achieve Dodge’s vision.
Curator's Note
Across these three intaglio processes, the Tomory Dodge explores the tension between control and improvisation. Line etching provides a structured foundation, while aquatint, spit-bite, and sugar-lift introduce instability, gesture, and tonal depth.
Rather than treating printmaking as a purely reproductive medium, the work positions the copper plate as an active site of resistance and transformation, aligning intaglio with painterly concerns of process, density, and movement.
